The epidemic is having a more and more direct impact on the shipping industry! Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the world's largest ro-ro shipping company, has announced temporary layoffs of about 2500 employees in the United States and Mexico, hit hard by the epidemic. And more layoffs from shipping companies may come.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen issued a notice on Wednesday saying that due to the economic impact of “COVID-19”'s epidemic, the company decided to temporarily lay off half of its employees in the United States and Mexico. In other words, the company decided to lay off 2500 employees in these two countries.
Wallenius Wilhemsen, a joint venture between Wilh Wilhelmsem and Wallenius, has six offices in the United States and operates in 11 ports in the United States and three ports in Mexico. But the company also said it would continue to assess market conditions and hope to rehire them when business rebounds.
Craig Jasienski, the company's chief executive, said in a notice: "although we try our best to avoid layoffs, we have no choice. Business disruptions have affected our freight volume and revenue."
Earlier this month, the company said the novel coronavirus epidemic would reduce shipments by about 20 per cent in the first quarter of this year. In addition, the company also expected second-quarter shipments to be affected, depending on the pace of recovery in Asia, further spread of the virus, and global market reaction.
The company also announced on Tuesday that it would dismantle four old ships and leave 10 idle. In addition, in order to save cash, the company also said it would cancel plans to install desulphurization equipment Scrubber on four ships and cancel $60 million in dividends.
